I want to start this month by telling you all how much I appreciate being voted in as your Mayor. It is an honor to represent the City of Yamhill throughout the County and a pleasure to oversee the running of your city government. We have an especially good group of city employees and city Council members that make being Mayor a true pleasure. I am always mindful that the running of the city is a group effort, and I am very proud to be a part of this group of dedicated individuals.
Councilor Jay Disbrow and I took a Weather Spotter class in November and I now have an official rain gauge at my house. Most mornings when I leave for work it’s too dark to see what it reads so I let it go the entire week before it was emptied. You don’t need me to tell you that the last week in November was very wet, but if you’re curious, we had 3.5 inches of rain from November 24th through December 2nd. I really don’t need a rain gauge though – I usually just look at my back yard and see how big my “pond” is getting. With the steady rain, it never really goes away, just gets bigger or smaller.
We had the annual Christmas Tree lighting at City Hall this past Saturday. This has grown into a wonderful community event. My thanks to Amy Meyers and the Yamhill/Carlton Intermediate School Pep Band. They played indoors this year due to the rain, but the Christmas Carols sounded wonderful. Santa was there again, handing out goodies to the younger crowd. We are all grateful that he keeps Yamhill on his schedule. Thanks also to the Yamhill Rural Fire District for putting up the decorations along the streets. As the song goes – “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas”.
I hope this time of year brings peace to you and your families. We can decorate the city and our homes, cook wonderful meals, buy each other the perfect gift, but it is always what is in our hearts that makes this a truly magical time of year.
