Mayor’s Corner – January/February 2013

As I write this on January 15, the CDC has declared a Flu epidemic for most of the country.  The west coast seems to be the only region not hit hard with this year’s Flu.  That does not mean that it is not coming our way!  We will be extremely lucky if we are not hit with large numbers of Flu cases in the upcoming weeks.  While there are many who say that the Flu is not that big of a deal, please remember that each year many people die from complications due to the Flu.  The elderly are at particular risk.  We can all do our part in preventing the spread of the Flu.  Wash your hands often and use hand sanitizer when grocery shopping.  I always cringe just a little bit this time of year when I have to grab a grocery cart – many stores have wipes that can be used on the cart handles.  This time of year, it’s well worth the effort.

On a bit happier note – please go by the park and see all the new developments happening.  New lighting for the covered areas has been put up and the new bathrooms are nearly complete.  Later in the spring, there will be paving of areas around the derby car ramp.  We should have a great time in the park come Derby Days!

As I said earlier, as I write this, it is January 15th.  Martin Luther King Jr. was born on this day in 1929.  It is right and fitting that we should celebrate that such a man lived and tried to teach the meaning of peace and equality.  I have another reason to celebrate this day.  Nine years earlier than Martin Luther King Jr., a man named George Albert Casterline was born on this day in Helena, Montana.  That man grew up to be my father.  Today he is 93 years old – and is loved by each of his four children.  Happy Birthday dad!

Remember that each day that passes is a day closer to Spring!
